The largest sectors of the Volyn regional economy are the agricultural and industrial sectors, which together make up more than half of the regional gross domestic product. The agricultural sector is focused on dairy and meat production as well as grain, sugar beets, potatoes and various vegetables. In rural areas the economic transition to private ownership of property and land is almost complete, with most agricultural production coming from the private sector.

The industrial sector is composed of more than 200 companies specializing in the production of food, machinery, fuel, chemicals and building materials.

The industrial companies in Volyn are known for their production of cars, buses, control devices, bearings, water meters, commercial retail equipment, animal feed and machinery, plastics, textiles, linoleum, roofing, construction brick, furniture, confections, pasta, sausages, beverages and canned foods.

The private sector has more than 3,700 small businesses and 28,300 individual entrepreneurs. More than one-tenth of the working population is employed by small businesses. They compose 9.2% of all production and provide nearly a fifth of tax revenues at all levels of government.

The mining sector is currently exploiting resources such as coal, natural gas, phosphates, copper, building stone, chalk, sapropel and helium. There are also industries in peat, brick and tile building materials, sand and glass and cement.

The region’s exports are mostly fossil fuels, machinery and heavy equipment, oil and processed products, casein and animal husbandry products.

Volyn imports lead fuels, lubricants, plastics, rubber, vehicles, some machinery and electrical equipment.
