Under the project of "Supporting Cooperation and Development of a Tourism Sector Development Concept for Kovel", the Volyn Investment Promotion Agency is generating a series of integrated actions and plans to improve the attractiveness of Kovel as a tourism destination. The concept will cover major measures to be undertaken over the next 10 years to improve the hospitality conditions of foreign and Ukrainian visitors to the city.

The city has a rich history that could be exploited to boost economic development, including historic churches, sites from the Battles of Kovel in 1916 and 1944, important Jewish historical places from before the Holocaust and many monuments to the famous Ukrainian poetess Lesya Ukrainka, born in Kovel. Problematically, many of these sites are in a state of disrepair and are not sufficiently marked to promote tourist interest in the city and its’ history.

"Kovel is underdeveloped in the tourism sector when considering its' prime location on the major international trasit routes [through Ukraine]. It is especially noticable when comparing Kovel to neighboring towns such as Lutsk and Chelm (Poland)," said Mikhail Tyhonyuk, chairman of the board of the Volyn Investment Promotion Agency.

"In developing this concept, maintaining the idea of the Kovel community is going to be a major factor. Therefore, all interested residents, travel agencies, cultural institutions, entrepreneurs, and representatives of Kovel NGOs are invited to discuss ideas and proposals for the development of Kovel's tourist attractiveness," said project coordinator Natalia Oksenyuk.
